The Biophysics Chair  is located on Corso Europa 30 and headed by Prof. Claudio Nicolini.

It comprises the laboratories of:
 

Molecular and Cellular Biophysics


Analysis of eukaryotic cells and microorganisms through static and flow (fluorescence and absorption) citometry, hybridization (in situ and on filter), three-dimensional representation of biopolymers in situ, CIDS and flow CIDS spectrometry; characterization of biopolymers (chromatin, DNA, proteins) by  Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Circular Dichroism and CIDS; extraction, purification and structural studies of chromosomal proteins with differential centrifugation, gel-electrophoresis and HPLC, scattering and low angle X-ray diffraction.
 
 
 

Recombinant DNA, site-specific mutagenesis (metalloproteins, thioredoxin and CD4), structural determination of proteins from data of two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. artificial intelligence, prediction of protein structures from statistical information and CD, NMR spectra interpretation systems, neural networks, expert systems, molecular mechanics and dynamics, biophysics of integrated systems, modeling of electron transfer.
 
 

Clinical Biophysics

Structure-function relationship at molecular and cellular level in many pathological disorders and their cclinical significance in terms of diagnosis and therapy. Medical diagnostics by X-rays , NMR and PET imaging, emodynamics, medical artificial Intelligence and biosensors.
 

Industrial Biophysics

Biocatalysis based on molecular enzyme, AFM and STM based molecular monolayers Reaction Centers, cytochromes, P450, antibodies, azurine, bovine rhodopsin, bacteriorhodopsin, lipids and organic compounds (polypirrole, polyaniline, fullerene, fatty acids, etc.).
 
 

Biosensor Laboratory. Layout of a potentiometric biosensor P.A.B. (Potentiometric Alternating Biosensorentirely designed and developed at the Institute Biophysics upon industrial grant (Sorin Biomedica-FIAT and Technobiochipand resulting in a series of international patents for various medical and environmental applications.
 
 
 

Their functional and structural characterization by means of measurements: surface potential, surface density, spectropolarimetric, spectrophotometric, planar conductivity, STM and AFM microscopy of organic, inorganic and biological compounds, nanolithography, monoelectron nanotechnology, prototype of scanning tunneling microscope, neurobiophysics, visual phototransduction. enzymatic potentiometric biosensors, cellular biosensors, optical biosensors, gravimetric immunosensors, biotransistors, physico-chemical characterization of surfaces and transducers; monoelectronic devices; displays and sensors based on light-sensitive proteins and on conductive polymer, recyclable batteries, photovoltaic cells.
